Aportion of a newly constructed bridge over the Bakra river collapsed in Pararia village of Bihar’s Araria district on Tuesday. No casualty has been reported in the incident, police said. Videos of the collapsed bridge have gone viral on social media.

The bridge connected Kursa Kanta and Sikti areas of Araria district. It was constructed by the state government recently. However, it was yet to be opened as approach roads to the bridge were not constructed.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Araria, Amit Ranjan said that officials have reached the incident site to examine the matter.

“A portion of a newly constructed bridge over Bakra river has collapsed. Officials have reached there to examine the matter," the SP said in an interaction with news agency PTI.

Meanwhile, Sikti MLA Vijay Kumar spoke with news agency ANI and blamed the construction company's owner for the incident. He said: "The bridge has collapsed due to negligence by the construction company's owner. We demand that the administration should conduct an investigation. "

This latest incident has happened after an under-construction bridge over the Kosi river collapsed in Supaul district in March, this year. In the bridge collapse in Supaul, one person had died while 10 others suffered injuries.

Here's how netizens reacted to the bridge collapse in Araria

"It happens every year in Bihar. Its routine work," said one user.

"Bihar and Bridge collapse is a never ending story," wrote another person.

"This is absolutely ridiculous quality of construction and total waste of tax payer's money! It needs deep investment on cost and expenditures.Who is going to be responsible for all of this?," posted a third person on social media platform X.

NEET-UG exam row: SC says any negligence should be thoroughly dealt with

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday said even if there was "0.001 per cent negligence" on the part of anyone in the conduct of the NEET-UG 2024 examination, it should be thoroughly dealt with.

Observing that students have to labour hard while preparing for these examinations, the apex court said the litigation pertaining to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate)-2024 examination ought not be treated as adversarial.

"Even if there is 0.001 per cent negligence on the part of anyone, it should be thoroughly dealt with," a vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti told the advocates appearing for the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The NTA conducts the all India pre-medical entrance test.

The bench was hearing two separate petitions raising grievances, including on grace marks given to students in the examination held on May 5.

"We all know the labour which the children undergo, especially in preparing for these exams," the bench said, adding, "Imagine a person who has played fraud on the system becomes a doctor, he is more deleterious to the society".

"Representing an agency which is responsible for conducting the examination, you must stand firm. If there is a mistake, yes this is a mistake and this is the action we are going to take. At least that inspires confidence in your performance," the bench told the NTA's counsel.

Stressing on timely action by the authority, the top court said the pleas would come up for hearing on July 8 along with other pending petitions, including those which have sought a direction to conduct the exam afresh.

It said the NTA and the Centre would file their responses on these fresh petitions within two weeks.

When one of the advocates appearing for some petitioners raised the issue pertaining to a question asked in the exam, the bench said, "They (NTA and Centre) will respond to it".

"Let us understand the purpose of your submissions. In these matters, we are prepared to sit up to evening," it observed.

While hearing separate petitions raising grievances over the NEET-UG 2024, the apex court had last week sought responses from the Centre and the NTA on a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of question paper leak and other irregularities in the exam.

The Centre and the NTA had on June 13 told the top court that they had cancelled the grace marks given to 1,563 candidates who took the examination for admission to MBBS and other such courses.

They will have the option to either take a retest or forgo the compensatory marks awarded to them for the loss of time, the Centre had said.

The examination was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates took it. The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4, apparently because the evaluation of the answer sheets got completed earlier.

There have been allegations of question paper leaks in states like Bihar and other irregularities in the prestigious exam.

The allegations have led to protests in several cities and filing of petitions in several high courts as also the Supreme Court. Scores of students protested in Delhi on June 10 seeking a probe into alleged irregularities.

As many as 67 students scored a perfect 720, unprecedented in the NTA's history, with six from a centre in Haryana's Faridabad figuring in the list, raising suspicions about irregularities. It has been alleged that grace marks contributed to 67 students sharing the top rank.

The NEET-UG examination is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

Electricity Bill Rules: Electricity Department has made a new rule for collecting security money, now the amount will be added to the bill every month.

Central Zone Executive Engineer Gaurav Saklani said that the security deposit is decided on the basis of electricity consumption of the consumer. If the consumer does not pay the electricity bill, some money is already deposited with the Energy Corporation as security deposit. On closing the connection, the entire security amount is refunded to the consumers.

Electricity Bill: Additional Security Deposit (ASD) collected from consumers will be recovered in installments every month. Earlier this was collected in lump sum in a year.

This security deposit is determined on the basis of the consumer’s annual electricity consumption. Which the Energy Corporation has started collecting in installments from the April bill. However, there is still confusion among common consumers regarding this.

In Uttarakhand, electricity rates have been increased by 6.92 percent from this month. Regarding which consumers and opposition political parties are continuously protesting. Meanwhile, the uneasiness of consumers has increased due to addition of additional security deposit in April bills. Actually, ASD was earlier collected only once a year.

Notices were sent to those who did not pay security money

Notices were also sent by the Energy Corporation to those who did not pay the security money. However, due to the huge amount, it was not possible for the common consumer to make the lump sum payment at the end of the financial year and the Energy Corporation had to put in a lot of effort to recover the huge amount.

Now the system of recovering the security deposit in installments has been started from the beginning of the financial year 2024-25. Which will be added to the monthly bill every month.

The deposit remains with the Energy Corporation in the form of security deposit.

Also, it is paid with interest. Those whose bill is less than the security deposit already deposited, their bill is reduced by adding it to the deposit.

How to understand additional security deposit

While taking a new connection, both the consumer and the energy corporation are not aware of the annual electricity consumption on the connection. In such a situation, the security deposit deposited at the time of taking the connection is very common.

If the consumer consumes more electricity than the security deposit, then their additional security deposit is demanded. For consumers whose electricity consumption is less than the security deposit, their bill is sent after reducing it.

Cycle lasts for 30 days

The cycle of electricity bill is 30 days, whereas it takes two to seven days to prepare and deliver it to the consumers. Consumers are given seven to 15 days to pay the bill. In such a situation, the consumer would have consumed electricity for 45 days by then. In such a situation, ASD is also charged for excess electricity consumption.
